The short version
- Pages are checked for length on your device. Nothing is sent while you browse.
- Text is sent only when you ask for a TLDR, and not at all when the on-device model is on.
- We keep summaries for a while so repeats are instant. We don't keep the text you send, and we don't keep who asked.
- No accounts, no analytics, no ads, no selling data.
What stays on your device
The extension and the Windows and Mac apps read the page you're on to work out its reading time. That check happens on your device and decides whether the bubble appears. Your settings, your "time saved" counter, and your last 200 TLDRs (kept for 7 days, so reopening a page is instant) are stored in your browser or app. Removing the extension or app removes them.
On Android, automatic mode is off unless you turn it on. When it's on, it reads the text on your screen on the phone to decide whether to light up the bubble, and skips password fields. Nothing is sent until you tap the bubble.
When something is sent
On-device model. If your browser has a built-in model (Chrome's Gemini Nano, turned on from the extension's welcome page or toolbar menu), the TLDR is made on your computer and the page text is not sent anywhere.
Our summarizer. Otherwise, the page text (up to 60,000 characters) and the page's address are sent over HTTPS to our summarizer when you tap the bubble, press the shortcut, share to the app, or paste into the web app. The extension and the desktop apps may start the request a moment early when your pointer moves onto the bubble, so the summary is ready when you click.
Shared summaries (optional for on-device users). If you use the on-device model and turn on "Use shared summaries for public pages", only the page's address is sent, to check whether a summary of that public page already exists. The page text is not sent.
Links. When you share or paste just a link, our server fetches that public page to read it. Some sites block automated readers; then we tell you so rather than guess.
What our server keeps
- Summaries of public pages, keyed by the page's address, so the next reader gets them instantly: 20 minutes for discussions, 6 hours for changelogs, 7 days for articles. A summary is only shared this way if our server can read the same public page itself. Selections, documents, and pages that need a login never go into this shared store.
- A short-lived cache of summaries for text you send, up to 1 hour, keyed by a one-way fingerprint of the text. Only someone sending the exact same text would get the same summary back.
- A count of summaries made each day, a single number, so the free service stays within its limits.
We don't keep the page text you send, your IP address, or any record of who asked for what. We don't log page text or summaries.
Who processes it
The summarizer runs on Cloudflare (Workers AI, with the cache on Cloudflare D1). Cloudflare handles your connection and your IP address to deliver the request and to limit abuse. Under Cloudflare's Workers AI terms, the text sent to its models isn't used to train them.
